The shop is divided between two sides-dining room side and gift shop side. It is quite a small shop and very crowded when there are customers exiting the side where the tables are located.
My mom and I were there for the 3 p.m. tea. When we arrived the 1 p.m. tea had just finished and the tables were being cleared. I spoke to the lady in charge and she cleared a table for two. The first thing you are asked to do is to pick out your selection of tea at the register where the tea is kept. This can be a lengthy process as you are invited to smell the tea in the large containers. I would rather sit down and pick a flavor from the menu and then the wait wouldn't be so long. This tea shop has a large variety of teas to pick from.
The owner was very nice and invited us to pick out a tea cup from a shelf in the back of the room. I consider this room to be Victorian style. Tea sandwiches, scones and other goodies were served on a three tier plate stacker. Tea was served in small pots and when more tea was desired hot water was poured in over previously used tea leaves. This practice can result in bitter strong tea if you don't drink the tea immediately and I would prefer to have my tea decanted in the kitchen. The tea sandwiches were very small and had a very small layer of filling. We were not served soup that was mentioned on the menu. The scones were very good and we were served lemon curd and Devonshire cream.
Service was slow and there clearly wasn't enough staff to handle the register and gift area.
What makes this tea room special is that it is decorated Victorian style and hats are provided for "dress up". There is a couch to sit on and wait for tea and you will be using it! If you want the traditional Victorian tea and don't mind the leaves being left in the tea pot then you will want to visit this establishment.
